Rapid Microbial Detection: The Power of Generic and Selective Dipslides

    Understanding Dipslides and Their Applications

Dipslides for microbial detection are crucial for quickly detecting and counting microorganisms in various environments. They consist of a plastic slide coated with nutrient-rich agar gel that supports microbial growth. After exposure to a sample, the slide shows visible bacterial growth, enabling identification. There are two main types of dipslides: generic and selective, each serving specific testing needs.

Generic dipslides support a wide range of bacteria, making them ideal for general testing. They are widely used in food safety to detect pathogens like E. coli or Salmonella. Rapid results from these slides help ensure health compliance efficiently.

Selective dipslides contain inhibitors to target specific microorganisms, such as coliform bacteria in water testing. These slides yield focused results, helping detect public health risks more accurately. They are also useful in environmental monitoring for more precise microbial assessments.

By replacing traditional methods, dipslides offer faster, more convenient microbial detection. Their simplicity and effectiveness make them invaluable across industries. Understanding the role of generic and selective dipslides helps optimize testing strategies and improve decision-making.

The Advantages of Using Dipslides in Microbiological Testing

    Dipslides offer several key advantages:

    • Cost-Effective: Dipslides are affordable compared to traditional microbiological tests, which require expensive equipment and skilled labor.
    • Simplicity: Easy to use with minimal training, dipslides feature a flexible paddle for effective surface contact, enhancing detection.
    • Reliability: Airtight lids preserve sample integrity and reduce contamination risk, ensuring accurate results.
    • Convenience: Many dipslides come with comparator charts for quick result interpretation, supporting fast decision-making.

Industries like food safety, healthcare, and water quality monitoring benefit from the simplicity, affordability, and reliability of dipslides, making them essential tools in microbiological testing.

Some of our most commonly used Dipslides are below, however please visit the Documents Tab to view our complete range

    Product Code Dipsilde Description
BT2 Nutrient Agar with TTC*; Most Colonies show up as red spots. Ideal for general use in a wide variety of applications and industries. This slide offers a total count on both sides.
PC2 Plate Count agar; a good general growth medium suitable for all total count applications, but of particular use for dairy applications. This slide offers a total count on both sides.
PC2T As above, with the addition of TTC* “Red Spot Dye”. This slide offers a total count on both sides.
BTM2 Nutient Agar with TTC* and Malt Extract Agar; Malt Extract Agar is a growth medium for yeasts and moulds, which reduces bacterial growth. High levels of bacteria can overwhelm the suppression. This slide offers a total count on one side and Yeasts and Moulds on the other.
RBS Tryptone Soya Agar with TTC* and Rose Bengal Agar; Rose Bengal is a selective Agar for yeasts and moulds, however, the antibiotic content can cause interference with the total count reading. This slide offers a total count on one side and a yeasts and moulds on the other.
PO A Plate Count Agar and OGYE* Agar; OGYE is a selective Agar using Oxytetracycline. This antibiotic is sensative to temperature and should not be incubated at temperatures above 25 deg C. This slide is ideal for food microbiology and includes neutralisers for the most common germicides. This slide offers a total count on one side and a yeasts and moulds on the other.
BRB2 Rose Begal Agar; for yeasts and moulds only. Rose Bengal is taken up by small colonies, which show up as pink dots and are easier to count. This slide offers yeasts and moulds count on both sides.
SC2 A Plate Count Agar and MacConkey3 Agar; MacConkey3 is a coliform specific Agar that surpresses all non Coliform bacteria. The Coliform group includes most of the important causative organisums of food poisoning. The plate count agar gives general count of viable aerobic organisums. This slide offers a total count agar on one side and a coliform agar on the other.
SCN As above, but including neutralisers for the most common germicides. This slide improves the recovery of sub lethally damaged organisums, which could cause problems if left, but which do not normally show up on culture plates because traces of disinfectant have been transferred. This slide is most useful for assesing the effectivness of cleaning procedures. This slide offers a toatl count on one side and a coliform count on the other.
SCT This is the same slide as the SC2 but with the addition of TTC* “Red Spot Dye” in the plate count Agar. This slide offers a total count on one side and a coliforms count on the othe
PCV Plate Count Agar and VRBG** Agar. VRBG** is a bile based medium without lactose, and is selective for Enterobacteriaceae. This group includes coliforms. Plate Count is a general growth Agar. This slide offers a total count on one side and a Enterobacteriaceae on the other.
TV As Above, but includes neutralisers for the most common germicides. This slide offers a total count on one side and a Entrobacteriaceae on the other.
TP Nutient Agar and Pseudomonas CFC Agar; for the detection of all Pseudomonas species. This slide offers a total count on one side and a Pseudomonas count on the other side.
TT2 Cled Agar and MacConkey3 Agar; Standar urine dipslide, useful for a wide variety of screening tests. This slide represents a considerable saving in time and money over standar MSU techniques. Dual media slides give more information than single media types. This slide offers total count on one side and a coliform on the other.
BV Baird Parker Agar and VRBG** Agar for Staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae. This slide offers a Staphylococci count on one side and an Enterobactericeae count on the other side.
E VRBG** Agar; Enterobacteriaceae. This slide offers a Enterobacteriaceae count on both sides.
BP Baird Parker Agar; Staphylococci. This slide offers a Staphylococci count on both sides.
